Objective
Create a cohesive design for the single issues and collected comics of Napoleon Dynamite. Abide by licensor guidelines and complement the art style while designing.
Process
Once I was able to see the first few art sketches I started my search for the right lettering style. The art has a unique look, so I decided hand drawing the dialogue balloons was the most appropriate route. This was the beginning of setting the design parameters for the book.
With licensed books we are required to follow strict guidelines. After reading through the licensing guide and reviewing assets I decided on giving this book the feel that it was made from notes and sketches in Napoleon’s notebook. I included character pages that had the same feel and reused art directly from the comic for the designs.
Ultimately this book was a success, it received good reviews and people felt it paid appropriate homage to the feel of the movie while delivering something new for fans to enjoy.
